With our unhealthy lifestyles today, filled with junk food, fast food, all-you-can-eat food and can’t-resist-the-temptation food, we search frantically for the foolproof diet to slash the calories. All you girls know exactly what I’m talking about. But what we fail to realize is the importance of eating healthy and taking preventative measures  from sickness and disease. Before we turn  to our family physician or Dr. Google for medical advice, why not consult the wise words of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam revealed from above. Medicine of the Prophet is one book that should be in every Muslim family’s library. Packed with natural remedies and prophetic guidance for ruqyah, everything is supported with authentic ahadith. Ibn Qayyim rahimahullah managed to write an extensive book on human health centuries before microscopes were even invented.

The Darussalam publication has been divided into 4 parts which make it a convenient family reference book. The topic of Prophetic medicine is introduced with a detailed section on the several kinds of diseases out there with emphasis on the hadith “For every sickness, there is a cure”. The two main sections of the book are “Using natural medicines prophetic-style” and “Prophetic Ruqyah”. A handy alphabetical  index at the end of the book allows you to easily skim through numerous foods and herbs mentioned in Ayat and Ahadith wit their benefits and remedies. From fevers to tonsillitis and even sorcery, the advice of Rasulullah salla Allahu alaihi wasallam for our health and wellbeing will be forever treasured by those who apply it to their fast-paced, fast-food based lifestyles of the 21st century.

The Journey of The Strangers – Book Review 3

“Islam began as something strange, and it will return to being something strange just as it began, so tuba (a tree in Paradise) for the strangers!”

This beautiful hadith sparks a ray of hope for many of us, who are striving to stick to the true path at a time when temptations and deviations surround us from all sides. We are living in a time of Fitna, a time when falsehood rules over the truth, when Muslims are labeled as terrorists, mujahidin are blasphemed and defamed, and the noble character of our beloved Prophet (S) is attacked. Amidst all the accusations and propaganda, the Muslim feels alienated and strange, among Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. His views oppose the majority; his actions are frowned upon in society; his principles considered backward and ‘stone-aged’.  He doesn’t follow the trend, nor is he a trend-setter; he doesn’t go with the flow, nor does the flow suit him. He’s strange in all aspects of society.  It is at times as this that the Muslim needs a source of comfort and inspiration to hold on to his religion- a mission as challenging as holding hot red coals.

Loving Our Parents – Book Review 2

Loving our parents Cover

Title: Loving Our Parents: Stories of Duties & Obligations Author: Abdul Malik Mujahid, Published by Darussalam Pages: 299

Loving Our Parents is an enjoyable collection of stories, which highlights our duties and obligations towards those who have sacrificed a great deal to raise and educate us. The author, Abdul Malik Mujahid provides a vast variety of stories and accounts from the lives of the Sahaba and the Salafas well as individuals of our day and time, reflecting role models of obedience. Each story incites the reader to ponder over the extremely elevated status of parents in Islam, and motivates him to improve his treatment towards them, for they are his middle gate to Jannah. The book also sheds light on some of the golden ways to please our parents and explains the countless rewards awaiting those dutiful children in this life and in the Hereafter. The author also presents the flip-side of the coin with descriptive accounts of unfortunate, defiant adults who cause harm to their parents and consequently pay the price for their disobedience in this life. Such true stories shock the reader and call him to reflect upon his own actions. He also touches upon our responsibilities towards our grandparents, close relatives and our elders- essential values lost in today’s self-centered society.

This hardcover book is loaded with enhancing pictures, attractive colors and key quotes, making the book all-the-more heartwarming and inspirational. Captivating to young hearts and minds, this is a “must-have” for every teen and adult. Believe me, it’s one book that you won’t put down till you’ve read it from cover to cover. 🙂

Residents in KSA may purchase “Loving Our Parents” from any Darussalam bookstore or Dawah Corner Bookstore (Makkah Hilton Mall or Clock Tower Mall in the Haram), as well as some of the mini bookstores in front of the Haram. Price: SR70 apprx.
